This course covers the trigonometric skills needed to study technical subjects, with a strong emphasis on solving triangles and graphing trigonometric functions. Posttests at the end of each lesson unit provide unlimited monitored practice for skill development.

Algebra for the Technician

Unit 1 - Right triangles, similar triangles, the sine, cosine,and tangent ratios

Unit 2 - The Pythagorean theorem, values of the trig ratios for special angles

Unit 3 - Using a calculator to find trigonometric ratios, solving a right triangle when given one side and one angle

Unit 4 - Solving a right triangle when given two sides, choosing the right method

Unit 5 - Applications: capacitive reactance, finding impedance

Test 1 - Test covering units 1 through 5

Unit 6 - Vector and scalar quantities, finding vector components

Unit 7 - Adding and subtracting vectors using components

Unit 8 - The Unit circle, trigonometric ratios for any angle

Unit 9 - Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of complex numbers

Unit 10 - Complex numbers in vector form, complex numbers in polar form

Test 2 - Test covering units 6 through 10

Unit 11 - Ranges of the trigonometric ratios, graphing y = sin x, graphing y = cos x

Unit 12 - Amplitude of a sine wave, frequency of a sine wave, period of a sine wave

Unit 13 - Phase shifts, amplitude and phase shift combinations

Unit 14 - Frequency and phase shift combinations, graphing the general sine and cosine

Unit 15 - Logarithmic notation, laws of logarithms

Test 3 - Test covering units 11 through 15

Unit 16 - Natural logarithms, exponential growth and decay

Unit 17 - Radian measure, graphs and formulas using radian measure

Unit 18 - Vectors in polar form; Euler's formula; multiplication, division, and powers in polar form

Unit 19 - The law of sines, the ambiguous case

Unit 20 - The law of cosines, solving a triangle when three sides are given

Test 4 - Test covering units 16 through 20

All posttests and general tests generate new questions each time a test is taken, so these materials can be used for practice as well as for evaluation purposes.
