Introduction to Computers

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course uses extensive graphics and simulations to take the mystery out of computers and how they work. The beginning computer user can get an all-important mental road map through the maze of computer terms, while the more advanced user can focus on the more detailed explanations of ideas such as baud rates and the half-duplex mode.

COURSE LENGTH:

This course contains 11 lesson units.

Unit 1 - Information processing activities, the information processing cycle, classifying computers, types of software

Unit 2 - Memory, input units, the processing unit, output units, programs

Unit 3 - The sections of a keyboard, function keys, the numeric keypad, the cursor keys, the mouse, the trackball, the joystick, the light pen, the touch screen, the scanner

Unit 4 - Monitors, types of monitors, printers, types of printers, plotters

Unit 5 - The control unit, the ALU, types of memory, memory size, executing a program

Unit 6 - Data organization, characters, fields, records, files, databases

Unit 7 - Word processing, word processing functions, choosing a word processor

Unit 8 - Electronic spreadsheets, the cell pointer, labels, values, formulas, using a spreadsheet

Unit 9 - Data communications, types of communications links, types of line connections, communications protocols, modems, networks

Unit 10 - Computer graphics, presentation graphics, paint programs, computer-aided design

Unit 11 - Programming languages, loading BASIC, running a program, BASIC commands, saving a BASIC program
