Introduction to BASIC Programming

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course shows you the principles and practices that are the foundation of all computer programming, including the batch files, procedures, and macros used in many common application software packages. GW-BASIC is used as the learning vehicle in presenting the fundamentals of good programming methodology.

PREREQUISITES:

Ability to use a keyboard, basic computer knowledge, basic math skills

COURSE LENGTH:

This course contains 18 lesson units and 1 test.

UNIT-BY-UNIT TOPICAL OUTLINE:

Unit 1 - Introduction to computer hardware: memory, the CPU, input units, output units, auxiliary storage; loading GW-BASIC

Unit 2 - The INPUT statement, the LET statement, the data processing cycle

Unit 3 - Mathematical operations, the PRINT statement, the END statement

Unit 4 - The order of mathematical operations

Unit 5 - The REM statement, displaying input prompts, hierarchy charts

Unit 6 - The GOSUB statement, the RETURN statement

Unit 7 - The IF...THEN statement, relational operators

Unit 8 - Flowcharting symbols, the GOTO statement

Unit 9 - Generating appropriate test data for programs

Unit 10 - Loops using IF...THEN and GOTO statements

Unit 11 - String variables, the LINE INPUT statement

Unit 12 - The DATA statement, the READ statement, sentinel loops

Unit 13 - Counters, accumulators

Unit 14 - The RESTORE statement, finding an average

Unit 15 - Print zones, TAB, the COLOR statement, the CLS statement, the LOCATE statement

Unit 16 - Formatting the output with the PRINT USING statement

Unit 17 - The LPRINT statement, program development

Unit 18 - Review

Test - Comprehensive final exam
