COURSE OVERVIEW:
This course presents the circuits and theory of operation for many important electronic devices that use solid state components.
PREREQUISITES:
Solid State Electronics or equivalent skills.

Unit 1 - Op Amp characteristics, inverting and non-inverting inputs, open loop gain, output voltages
Unit 2 - Differential amplifier operation, Op Amp parameters, inverting and non-inverting amplifiers, voltage followers, cascaded amplifiers
Unit 3 - Digital signals versus analog signals, comparators, integrators, summing amplifiers, summing amplifiers with weighted inputs, Digital-to-Analog converters
Unit 4 - JFET characteristics, drain current control in a JFET, pinch-off voltage, constant current region, drain current calculations
Unit 5 - JFET transconductance curves, gate bias, Q-point range for a JFET
Unit 6 - JFET biasing: self bias, voltage divider bias, current source bias; JFET configurations
Unit 7 - MOSFET's, depletion mode operation, enhancement mode operation, biasing, VMOS, cascode amplifiers
Unit 8 - Amplifier frequency response, bandwidth, Bode plots, gain in decibels
Unit 9 - Negative feedback amplifiers, effective gain
Unit 10 - Tuned amplifiers, passband, stop band, roll-off, Q for a tuned amplifier
Unit 11 - Loaded Q for a tuned amplifier, Class C amplifiers, active filters
Unit 12 - Oscillators, the Barkhausen criterion, phase shift oscillators, Wien-bridge oscillators, Colpitts oscillators
Unit 13 - Clapp oscillators, Hartley oscillators, Armstrong oscillators, crystal-controlled oscillators
Unit 14 - Electronic devices: LED's, multisegment displays, photo devices, optoisolation, tunnel diodes, Schottky diodes, Varactors
Unit 15 - Four-layer devices: Shockley diodes, SCR's, Diacs, Triacs
Unit 16 - SCR motor controls, SCR power controls, AC motor controls, unijunction transistors, relaxation oscillators
