COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course introduces the student to the basic principles and theory of operation for digital circuits.

PREREQUISITES:

Electronic Circuits or equivalent skills.

COURSE LENGTH:

This course contains 18 lessons and 18 drills.

UNIT-BY-UNIT TOPICAL OUTLINE:

Unit 1 - Binary numbers, binary to decimal conversions, decimal to binary conversions, binary addition

Unit 2 - Analog versus digital, diode switches, BJT switches, propagation delays, JFET switches, MOSFET switches, Op Amp switches

Unit 3 - AND gates, truth tables, AND gate circuits

Unit 4 - OR gates, OR gate circuits, NOT gates, NOT gate circuits, buffers

Unit 5 - NAND gates, NOR gates, XOR gates, XNOR gates

Unit 6 - Boolean multiplication, boolean addition, boolean negation, the boolean equation for a circuit, negated inputs

Unit 7 - The boolean equation for an XOR gate, the boolean equation for an XNOR gate, DeMorgan's theorems, simplifying boolean expressions

Unit 8 - IC logic families, current sourcing/sinking, fan-out, voltage and current parameters, noise margin, RTL, DTL, HTL, ECL

Unit 9 - The TTL family, multiple emitter inputs, voltage requirements, floating inputs

Unit 10 - TTL subfamilies: 74, 74L, 74H, 74S, 74LS, 74AS, 74ALS; wire ANDing; open collector TTL; pull-up resistors; tristate logic

Unit 11 - CMOS subfamilies: 4000, 74C, 74HC, 74HCT; interfacing logic families; CMOS handling techniques

Unit 12 - RS flip-flops, NOR RS flip-flops, NAND RS flip-flops

Unit 13 - Flip-flop clocking, the D latch, Preset, Clear

Unit 14 - JK flip-flops, toggle action, racing, edge triggering, master-slave JK flip-flops

Unit 15 - Ripple counters, BCD ripple counters, synchronous counters, decrement counters

Unit 16 - Half-adder circuits, full adders, multi-bit adders

Unit 17 - Encoding, decoding, multiplexing

Unit 18 - Multivibrator clocks, the Schmitt trigger, the 555 timer, crystal-controlled clocks
