COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course covers the algebra skills needed to study technical subjects, with a strong emphasis on solving equations and graphing. The posttests at the end of each lesson unit provide unlimited monitored practice for skill development.

This course contains 20 lesson units and 4 tests.

Practical Mathematics or equivalent skills

Unit 1 - Definitions: factors, terms, coefficients, constants, monomials, binomials, trinomials, polynomials, degree

Unit 2 - Combining like terms, basic laws, simplifying polynomials

Unit 3 - Monomial products, monomial times polynomial, removing grouping symbols

Unit 4 - Polynomial products, monomial quotients, polynomial divided by monomial

Unit 5 - Powers of a monomial, squaring a binomial, polynomial divisions (optional)

Test 1 - Test covering units 1 through 5

Unit 6 - Equivalent equations, solving an equation, linear equations in one unknown

Unit 7 - Transposition, solving for a variable in a formula

Unit 8 - Solving inequalities, absolute value

Unit 9 - Roots of a number, fractional exponents, simplifying roots

Unit 10 - Rectangular coordinates, angles, polar coordinates

Test 2 - Test covering units 6 through 10

Unit 11 - Slope of a line, slope-intercept form

Unit 12 - Point-slope form, two-point form

Unit 13 - Common factors, factoring a trinomial

Unit 14 - Combining factoring methods, algebraic fractions

Unit 15 - Solving a quadratic equation by factoring, imaginary numbers

Test 3 - Test covering units 11 through 15

Unit 16 - Using special products to solve a quadratic equation

Unit 17 - The quadratic formula, complex solutions, finding factors

Unit 18 - The graphical method for solving systems of equations, the addition method

Unit 19 - Variations of the addition method, the substitution method

Unit 20 - Systems of three equations with three unknowns

Test 4 - Test covering units 16 through 20

All posttests and general tests generate new questions each time a test is taken, so these materials can be used for practice as well as for evaluation purposes.
